Jean-Jacques Dordain has received the Von Karman award during the IAA Honor Night Dinner in front of 14 Heads of space agencies and 300 guests (IAA Academy Day in Naples, Italy, 30 September 2012). The Von Karman award established in 1982 is the premier award of the Academy. It is given annually to recognize outstanding lifetime achievements in any branch of science without limit of nationality or sex. The award honors the memory of the Academy's founder and first President, a scientist of the highest international reputation.

A successful International Academy of Astronautics Heads of Space Agencies Summit was held on November 17, 2010 in Washington DC, USA. The IAA Heads of Space Agencies Summit Follow-on plenary event was held on October 6, 2011 in Cape Town, South Africa. For this Heads of Space Agencies Summit Follow-on plenary event, speakers were Dr Gopalan Madhavan Nair, President of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), Dr Enrico Saggese, President of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), Dr Marius-Ioan Piso, President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), Dr Ray O. Johnson, Chief Technology Officer of Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMCO) and the moderator was Dr Jean-Michel Contant, Secretary-General of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA).

After 50 years of existence the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) is well established as an elite body that actively contributes to the advancement of international cooperation. On November 17, 2010, leaders of 30 space agencies from around the world gathered in Washington, D.C. for an unprecedented IAA Heads of Space Agencies Summit. Heads of agencies have unanimously welcomed the IAA Summit Declaration as well as the Academy serving as catalyst for the next few years to stimulate broader international cooperation with particular emphasis on Space emerging countries:
