Heads of Space Agencies Summit
Follow-On

Summit Follow-On

Preamble

The International Academy of Astronautics has entered the next 50 years of its existence with many impressive achievements, which were highlighted by the Heads of Space Agencies Summit held in November 2010 where thirty agencies leaders welcomed the IAA Summit Declaration on the critical global topics of Human Space Flight, Planetary Robotic Exploration, Climate Change/Green Systems and Disaster Management/Natural Hazards.

Detailed information on the
Heads of Space Agencies Summit includes the four IAA studies on Summit topics, excerpts speeches of agencies leaders and pictures. Photos of the Gala event are also available.

Summit Follow-On

For 50 years, the Academy activities have always strengthened the effectiveness and supported global space activities. Today, our intent is to foster closer and broader international coordination across the four Summit topics.

Committed to accomplishing this goal, the Academy is fully engaged in the Summit follow-on activities. The first step was to prioritize the Summit Declaration recommendations and the IAA solicited all Academicians asking for their top three priorities on the Summit Declaration recommendations. It was also decided to consult the space agencies for their suggestions so the Academy does not work in a vacuum. Their inputs were taken only as background information as the IAA is an independent organization. The Academicians’ responses were analyzed and presented to the Board of Trustees who endorsed them. These
IAA Summit Priorities will provide the direction for the Summit follow-on activities in 2012-2013.

It is now a high time to reflect on these priorities and come up with new ideas and project proposals, which will define IAA actions for the years to come. For this purpose, the Academy has formed a Summit Steering Committee in charge of overseeing the follow-on process as well as four Coordinating Groups in charge of implementing the respective Summit priorities.

Conferences

The Academy has started a series of events throughout the world to facilitate the discussions not only among IAA members but also with a wider international community of space experts. The first event will take place in Kiev on 30 May 2012 as IAA regional meeting with the participation of the head of the Space Agency of Ukraine and other space agencies have also been invited.
