The 5th International Conference ‘Space Technologies: Present and Future’ was held on 19 – 21 May 2015 in Dnepropetrovsk under the aegis of the International Academy of Astronautics. Yuzhnoye State Design Office and IAA Ukrainian branch were the main organizers.
More than 260 scientists and specialists from twenty countries of the world took part in the conference activity. Among those were Oleg Uruskyi, Head of State Space Agency of Ukraine; members of IAA Board of Trustees: Prof. Marius-Ioan Piso, Head of Space Agency of Romania and Filippo Graziani, Professor of La Sapienza University of Rome; Claude Nicollier, Swiss Astrophysicist, Astronaut of European Space Agency, Participant of four space flights; Yaroslav Yatskiv, Member of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Deputy Head of the Space Board.
More than 125 papers were presented during the five sessions of the conference and 8 papers were delivered during the plenary session. Two round-table discussions were held on the urgent issues of space technologies: ‘Interorbital Space Service’ and ‘Problems of Space Debris Removal from Near-Earth Space’.
Special attention was paid at the conference to the following topical problems:
- ESA Rosetta mission to Churyumov-Gerasimenko comet (a paper of K.I. Churyumov, Corresponding Member of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Director of Kyiv Planetarium)
- Results of 25-year operation of the Hubble Space Telescope (a detailed paper of Claude Nicollier, Swiss Astronaut).
A lot of papers on practical achievements of the Ukrainian space science and technology were delivered by the following speakers: Yaroslav Yatskiv, Member of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; Oleg Uruskyi, Head of State Space Agency of Ukraine; Alexander Degtyarev, General Designer – General Director of Yuzhnoye State Design Office; Oleg Fedorov, Head of Space Research Institute of Ukraine; Anatoly Alpatov, D.E., Institute of Technical Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
The conference proved that the international scientific society is ready for further development – under the IAA aegis – of the following priority directions of joint research:
- Earth’s anti-asteroid protection
- Space debris removal from near-earth space
- Interorbital service prospects
- New materials and technologies in space & rocket hardware manufacture.
The press conference, with a lot of mass media representatives involved, showed the mass media increasing interest for the issues discussed, the high activity of enthusiastic scientists, scientific and design organizations and creative youth.
International conferences under the IAA aegis are recommended to be held in Ukraine hereafter. The next 6th IAA Conference is scheduled to be arranged in May 2017 in Dnepropetrovsk.
