Academician Lori Garver, Deputy Administrator of NASA opened Monday April 15, the 2013 IAA Planetary Defense Conference at Flagstaff, Arizona, USA. Nearly 300 scientists and engineers from 35 countries gathered to discuss near Earth objects and asteroids threats to Earth. A special session on the Chelyabinsk event of February 15 was held with a wide public and press interest in this unique meteor strike. David Morrison, Mark Boslough, Clark Chapman and Alan Harris were providing analysis of what happened. Academicians William Ailor (Aerospace Corp.) and Richard Tremayne-Smith are chairing the conference. The Secretary General of the Academy, Jean-Michel Contant gave an introductory presentation and William Grabe, Vice-President Research and David Trilling of the Northern Arizona University welcomed the audience. The International Academy of Astronautics is inviting proposals from candidate Local Organizing Committees to host the 2015 IAA Planetary Defense Conference in the spring 2015. Symposium topics are focused on detecting and tracking asteroids and comets that might be hazardous to our planet, characteristics of these objects, deflecting a threatening object should one be detected, the nature of impact disasters, and the political, legal and policy issues that must be considered as part of an overall mitigation strategy.
The International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) is announcing the Heads of Space Agencies Summit on Exploration (Planetary Robotic and Human Spaceflight Exploration) that will be held in Washington D.C., United States, on 9-10 January 2014. This Summit is a follow-on of the 2010 Heads of Space Agencies Summit where thirty agencies leaders welcomed the IAA Summit Declaration. Heads of Space Agencies and their delegations will gather, in company with policy makers, government representatives, distinguished scientists, and leading Academicians from all over the world for an unprecedented IAA Heads of Space Agencies Summit on Exploration to follow-on with the 2010 Summit Declaration an discuss new fresh ideas on international cooperation. In addition, this IAA Summit will be taking place in cooperation and conjunction with the ministerial International Space Exploration Forum, a policy dialogue on space exploration at minister-level hosted for the first time by the US Department of State.
The 4th IAA Conference on Space Technologies: the Present and Future took place in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, April 17-19, 2013. Prof. Hiroki Matsuo, Vice-President IAA and Alexander Degtyarev, Trustee IAA, opened the conference in front of more than 300 participants. The program presented 220 papers from 22 countries.

The 6th European Conference on Space Debris took place in Darmstadt, Germany, April 22-25, 2013. To improve our understanding of the space debris environment, assess related risks, mitigate its growth, and control its stability, a multitude of technical disciplines is required. Many of these were addressed in the course of this conference by recognized experts in their fields.
The IAA spring meetings gathered more than two hundred members. Newly elected members were inducted during the IAA honor night dinner by President Madhavan Nair, Vice-President Anatoly Perminov, Vice-President Liu Jiyuan, Vice-President Yannick d'Escatha, Vice-President Hiroki Matsuo and Secretary General Jean-Michel Contant: Michael Gruntman, corresponding member for basic sciences section, Chantal Cappelletti, Klaus Dannenberg, David Dunham, Christian Heipke and Turki Saud Al-Saud, corresponding members for engineering sciences section, Lawrence Pinsky, corresponding member for life sciences section, Jacques Arnould and Ger Nieuwpoort, corresponding members for social sciences section, and Zvi Kaplan, Member for engineering sciences section.
The International Academy of Astronautics and the United Nations Human Space Technology Initiative Cooperation
The Chinese Society of Astronautics (CSA) and the International Academy of Aeronautics (IAA) will hold jointly the 5th CSA-IAA Conference on Advanced Space Technology from May 20-23, 2013, Shanghai , China. The conference will provide a forum for technicians, researchers, scholars, decision makers and young professionals focusing on the theme of “New Era for Space Science and Technology”.
The 10th IAA Low-Cost Planetary Missions Conference will take place in Pasadena, USA, 18-20 June 2013. Abstract submission closes on 19 April, 2013. It will be followed on 21 June 2013 by the Theodore von Karman Symposium.
The 8th IAA Symposium on the Future of Space Exploration: Towards the Stars , will take place in Turin, Italy, 03-05 July 2013.
